What Are the Best Backlink Monitoring Tools in 2026? 10 Picks Compared

Five tools watch a list of links you built, five watch your whole profile, from free to $139 a month. Nine of them email you; one writes to the publisher.

Links vanish. Most tools just tell you.

The best backlink monitoring tool depends on which links you need to protect. GEOboom watches the placements it won for you, checks them daily and writes to the publisher itself when one drops. LinkChecker.pro, Linkody, Backlink Monitor and BacklinkVigil check a list of links you add yourself, from $11.99 a month. SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Semrush, SEOptimer and Seobility watch your whole profile with their own crawlers, inside a full SEO suite.

Nine of the ten send you an email and stop there. The column that matters is not the monthly price but how often the tool looks, and who writes to the publisher afterwards.

We checked every pricing page on November 4, 2026. Disclosure: this list is written by the GEOboom team. GEOboom is our product and is listed first; every other tool is described from its own site and public reviews.

A backlink monitoring tool tells you when a link you count on changes. We compared five things.

  • What it checks. Whether the link is still on the page, whether it turned nofollow or sponsored, whether the anchor changed, and whether the page still loads and stays indexed. For a mention in a "best X" list, your brand's text and its spot in the list matter too.
  • How often it checks. Daily, every few days, weekly, or only when the tool's own index updates.
  • What happens when a link drops. Most monitors stop at an alert. Then you find the contact and write the email yourself.
  • Where the links come from. You add them, the tool finds them in its own index, or it watches the placements it negotiated for you.
  • Limits and price. How many links a plan covers, and whether you pay monthly or yearly.

Links go missing more often than you would think. A Pew Research Center study of just under a million pages found that a quarter of the pages that existed at some point between 2013 and 2023 were no longer accessible by October 2023, and that 23% of news pages contain at least one broken link (May 2024). And LinkDR's catalog of 10,030 sites found that 24% of the publishers who state their terms sell time-limited links only (September 2026) — LinkDR sells link building, so that is a vendor's number, but it is the only published one we have.

We only kept live tools that show prices on their site.

These five watch a list of placements you built, bought or swapped: a backlink tracker for the links you worked for. For research tools, see our 15 best link building tools by category. To hand off the outreach itself, see the best link building services.

1. GEOboom: best for keeping the placements you won

Best for: in-house SEOs, marketers and agencies that win placements through outreach and want them to stay live.

GEOboom is link-building and mention outreach software. It also watches every placement it negotiated for you. Once a day it checks your text, your spot in the list, the link, nofollow and the anchor. If something drops, GEOboom writes to the publisher itself and tells you it did. It does not watch links you got elsewhere, so for the whole profile, pair it with a tool from the next section.

Key features

  • It checks the mention, not just the link. Daily checks of your text, your spot in the list, the link, nofollow and the anchor.
  • It writes to the publisher itself. When a placement drops, the email goes out right away, in the same thread where the deal was agreed. If the publisher is quiet, the follow-ups go in that thread too.
  • Both sides of an exchange. In a mention exchange it checks your mention on their site and theirs on yours, as in the GrowPad exchange case study.
  • Nothing to import. Every live placement from a GEOboom deal is checked, and you get an email when one changes.
  • No credits. Monitoring and the emails to publishers are included in the subscription; credits pay for publishers GEOboom writes to for the first time.

Pricing: from $150 a month, 2–8 placements a month, with monitoring included. Publisher fees are separate. Buy for You turns many small publishers into one contract and one invoice, for 30% per payment (minimum $40), with 12 months of placement protection. As of November 2026, geoboom.io.

Pros

  • It asks the publisher to fix a drop for you.
  • It checks your text and your spot in a list, not only the link.
  • Zero client time in the case study below.

Cons

  • It only watches placements negotiated through GEOboom.
  • No whole-profile tracking, so pair it with a tool from the next section.
  • Not done-for-you: you approve each offer.

In practice: a GrowPad mention dropped when the publisher updated the post. GEOboom caught it in the daily check and emailed the publisher in the deal thread. The publisher replied in about an hour, and the mention was back the next day. GrowPad spent 0 minutes, and it cost $0. Read the case study, or start with one project on GEOboom.

Backlink monitoring tools: FAQ

What is backlink monitoring?

It is checking, on a schedule, that the links to your site are still live and unchanged. A backlink monitoring tool flags lost links, nofollow switches, anchor changes and pages that drop out of Google's index, so you can fix them early.

What are the best tools for monitoring backlinks?

For placements you won through outreach, GEOboom. For links you add yourself, LinkChecker.pro, Linkody, Backlink Monitor and BacklinkVigil. For your whole backlink profile, SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Semrush, SEOptimer and Seobility.

Is there a free backlink monitoring tool?

Yes. Google Search Console shows your top linking sites, but it sends no alerts. BacklinkVigil monitors up to 10 backlinks free. Linkody, SE Ranking, SEOptimer and Seobility all have free trials, and Linkody's runs 30 days without a card.

How often should you check your backlinks?

Daily for links you paid for or worked to win, and weekly for the rest of the profile. GEOboom, LinkChecker.pro, Linkody and BacklinkVigil check daily; Backlink Monitor every 24 to 48 hours; the SEO platforms recheck when their crawler returns or when you rerun the report.

What should you do when a backlink is lost?

Check the page first: the link may have moved, turned nofollow, or the page may be down. Then write to the publisher, ideally in the thread where you agreed the placement, because that is where the terms are. GEOboom sends that email itself.

Are backlinks still relevant in 2026?

Yes. Links still help pages rank, and mentions in “best X” lists now feed AI answers too. In an Ahrefs study of ChatGPT answers to 750 prompts, “best X” lists made up 43.8% of the pages cited as sources (December 2025).

How this list was prepared

Who wrote it. Oleksii Andrusenko, co-founder of GEOboom and CEO of GrowPad. Reviewed by Artur, CTO of GEOboom.

What we checked. On November 4, 2026 we looked at the top US Google results for "backlink monitoring tool", "best backlink monitoring tools", "backlink monitoring tools" and "backlink monitoring", and read the pricing, feature and help pages of all ten tools and their G2 profiles. G2 answers a crawler with a 403, so the G2 ratings are from G2's own product pages as indexed that day; those counts move daily, and SE Ranking's varies between 1,591 and 1,620 across G2's own pages, which is why it is given as about 1,600. Screenshots come from each tool's own site, GEOboom's included.

What we didn't do. We didn't run paid plans of the nine other tools for this list. Where a tool's site doesn't say how often it checks, or what it alerts on, we say so rather than guess.

Assumptions. "About one in six links disappears within a year" is a common industry estimate, not a study, so it is not quoted here as a finding; the Pew Research Center figures are. The time-limited links figure comes from LinkDR, which sells link building. Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and Linkody show euros to a European visitor, and the dollar prices here are the ones they show in the US; Seobility prices in euros only, converted at the ECB reference rate for November 3, 2026.

Disclosure. GEOboom is our product, and it is listed first. GrowPad, named in our case studies, is run by GEOboom's co-founder. Every other tool is described from its own pages, and we update prices when they change.
